CCTV footage shows suspects behind the death of MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala

Rare CCTV footage has been released to the media on the course of events that took place just before the death of Polonnarawa District Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala. The CCTV footage shows several individuals attacking the vehicle the MP was travelling in, initially taking the body guard out of the vehicle to be assaulted. Following that, MP Athukorala was forced out of his vehicle and then assaulted by the mob. It was then that an individual, wearing a red t-shirt, arrived at the scene with a large pole and forcibly cornered the MP and his bodyguard and began beating MP Athukorala. These unraveling on incidents were recorded from several CCTV cameras along the road, and with this information, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) was able to identify the suspect and arrest the individual. The main suspect was identified as a 29 year old bus driver residing in Nittambuwa. Several other arrests were also made in connection to the assault and death of MP Athukorala, and are currently in custody by the CID.
