Sunny Side Up: No more buffets in the House?

05 Jun 2022

Speaker of Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena is reportedly looking at providing nutritious meals to parliamentarians, parliamentary staff, and visitors at a lower cost, given the ongoing economic crisis in the country. It is learnt that Parliament incurs a heavy cost to feed parliamentarians and their staff members as well as visitors to the House. It is estimated to cost around Rs. 120 million annually. It is also learnt that the Speaker had inquired about the possibility of providing meal packs in Parliament instead of buffet meals that are currently served at the restaurants in the House. Meanwhile, 53 MPs of the ruling party have already called on the Speaker to stop serving meals to parliamentarians at special rates and to serve meals at normal prices to them as well. However, a final decision on the matter is yet to be taken by the Speaker. Nevertheless, Speaker Abeywardena, it is learnt, has informed party leaders that he is looking at increasing the price of meals served in Parliament. This, he had said, would not only apply to the MPs but across the board, covering all meals served in the House. Meanwhile, the Speaker had also reminded that the bomb that was used to attack Parliament in the 1980s was in fact smuggled into the House covered as a lunch parcel.
