Sunny Side Up: JVP-FSP clash over violent protests

17 Jul 2022

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and its defectors, the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP), are currently at loggerheads over the violent turn taken by the protests on Wednesday (13) near the Parliament Complex. The clashes between the protesters and security forces near the Parliament Complex left many injured, including security forces personnel. The JVP claimed that the party had organised a protest campaign near the Parliament to demand Ranil Wickremesinghe’s resignation and for Parliament to take charge of the appointment of the acting president and the prime minister of the all-party interim government. Senior JVPers K.D. Lalkantha, Sunil Handunnetti, Sunil Watagala, and MP Dr. Harini Amarasuriya were present at the protest site. However, the protests turned violent towards evening with crowds arriving in large numbers at the protest site. JVP leaders stated that a group of violent elements with ulterior motives had encroached into the protest site and engaged in violence. The indication was that a group of unruly FSP supporters were behind the violence. Meanwhile, the FSP claimed that it was JVP leaders who had organised the protest and called on the others to participate in the protest while the protesters at Galle Face did not have any intention of surrounding the Parliament Complex. FSP seniors further alleged that the JVP was trying to push the country into anarchy through violence. However, the military took control of the situation by deploying the three armed forces for security around Colombo.
