SJB claims no SJB MPs voted Ranil, won’t crossover

22 Jul 2022

The main Parliamentary Opposition, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) claimed yesterday (21) that not a single MP from the SJB voted for the United National Party (UNP) Leader and President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Wednesday and that no one from the party will join the governing side under him.  Addressing a media briefing held yesterday, SJB General Secretary and MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara assured that despite rumours that 20 SJB MPs will crossover, not even one MP from the SJB will crossover to be a part of the new Cabinet of Ministers or the Government to be formed by Wickremesinghe.  “Not even one MP from the SJB or the SJB alliance voted for this President. Our party did not even spend five cents on this. We practise clean politics,” said Madduma Bandara.  After former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned on 15 July due to a massive public uprising against him, Parliament selected the new President through a vote, according to the Constitution, on Wednesday (20).  A total of 223 MPs cast their votes, out of which 219 were deemed valid. Accordingly, Wickremesinghe obtained 134 votes, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Dullas Alahapperuma – who was backed by the SJB after the latter’s Leader Sajith Premadasa withdrew his own candidacy – obtained 82 votes, and National People’s Power (NPP) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake received three votes.  Madduma Bandara claimed that certain MPs had voted for Wickremesinghe in order to “rebuild their burnt houses, to protect themselves, to remain in power, and to get their vehicle permits”. He said that the Parliamentary vote to elect the new President did not reflect the aspirations of the people. However, he expressed the SJB’s support to develop the country.
