Due to a breakdown at the Norochcholai power plant today, the island wide power cut duration will have to be extended by several hours apart from the scheduled power cut that is currently in place, says Isuru Kasthurirathne, a representative from the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) told The Morning. Kasthurirathne further confirmed that the reason for the breakdown was a steam pipeline that had built up in pressure and thus had to be shut down "The Unit 3 generator had a steam leak and due to this, the steam had added pressure to the boiler feed pump. Because of this, we had to shut down that generator and we would lose about 300MW of electricity to the grid," he confirmed. He further noted that the CEB engineers hope to repair and restore power generation within 5 to 6 days.
