Cabinet Spokesperson and Health and Mass Media Minister, Dr Nalinda Jayatissa, pledged the Government would introduce age-based sex education in the curriculum reforms that the Government hopes to introduce by next year (2027).
Responding to questions during the weekly Cabinet media briefing yesterday (02), Dr Jayatissa noted however that each approach will be tailored accordingly while imparting digital education and other subject matter, adding that measures would also be taken to provide age-related sex education to children.
Fielding further questions, he said however that sex education would have to be provided whilst educating not only children but also adults. “Besides the clergy, the Opposition Leader (Sajith Premadasa) and those such as former Minister Wimal Weerawansa have been severely critical with regard to the provision of sex education to young children. Therefore, the issue of sex education for children would have to be dealt with cautiously,” he said.
