Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Arun Hemachandra has stressed the need for stronger social protection, safe overseas employment opportunities and economic security for migrant workers.

Speaking at an ILO programme in Colombo today (28), he highlighted the need for protection throughout the migration process, from recruitment and employment to return and reintegration.

The Government has increased compensation for the death of eligible migrant workers to Rs. 2 million, begun work on a contributory pension scheme and drafted a new Foreign Employment Act.

Preparations are also underway to establish a mechanism for Sri Lankans living overseas to exercise their voting rights.

The Acting Minister also highlighted the “LankaKonect” service, which allows migrant workers to submit complaints, track their progress and access government assistance.
