- Investigations reveal several brands detained beyond EV models imported into SL
- Customs Spokesman confirms issues in other brands including Raize, Nissan X-Trail
- Cites discrepancies in declared engine capacities, import documentation
- Action against importers to follow completion of inquiries and pending court rulings
Investigations by Sri Lanka Customs have revealed that several other vehicle brands have been imported to the country allegedly in violation of the law, resulting in their detention, similar to the much-publicised seizure of certain models imported into the country.
Speaking to The Sunday Morning Business, Sri Lanka Customs Media Spokesman Chandana Punchihewa revealed that investigations carried out by Customs had uncovered issues similar to those found in certain models that had been detained previously.
He added that steps had been taken to detain vehicles imported in violation of the law.
“The investigations haven’t been completed yet; we are still continuing them. I have received information that there are a few more (vehicle brands) with similar issues,” he stated.
Responding to a query by The Sunday Morning Business on whether steps would be taken to detain such other vehicle brands similar to the Electric Vehicles (EVs) already detained by Customs, he stated: “Currently, to the best of my knowledge, several other vehicles have also been detained. Because of the number of EVs involved and because the company instituted legal proceedings, it has been more widely discussed.
“In addition, there were some issues with regard to the Raize and one model of the Nissan X-Trail. But their numbers are small – there are only four X-Trails. There were also issues with regard to certain small vehicle models that had been imported, where they had declared 49 W (engine capacity) when it was in fact 70 W,” he said.
Punchihewa declined to provide any specifics on these vehicle models that had been detained by Customs, stating that he was unable to provide such details until the inquiry was completed.
He stated that the course of action to be taken against such errant vehicle importers would be determined upon the completion of the investigations and inquiry.
