A silent protest by parents was launched this morning (19) in front of the Ministry of Education, demanding the immediate resumption of the recently suspended education reforms for Grade 6 students.
Organized by the “Grade 06 Parents’ Union,” similar demonstrations also took place across the island, including in Polonnaruwa and Galle.
The protests highlight widespread concern over the halt in reform plans aimed at improving the education system. Nimal Mudunkotuwa, General Secretary of the Graded Principals’ Association, noted that many parents may not fully understand the complexities involved in the reform process.
Venerable Yalwela Pannasekara Thero, President of the All Ceylon United Teachers’ Union, emphasized that reforms should only proceed after addressing existing flaws in the current system.
In addition, a torch-lit protest organized by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) was held last night (18) in Ruwanwella’s Kannaththota area, calling for effective educational reforms.
