The Bill to provide Sign Language with the same recognition as other languages has already been drafted and is to be presented to the Parliament soon for approval and the subsequent implementation of the Act, Minister of Rural Development, Social Security, and Community Empowerment Dr. Upali Pannilage stated.
He made these remarks while addressing the National Sign Language Day celebrations held under the theme ‘No Human Rights Without Sign Language Rights’ on Tuesday (23) at Suhurupaya, Battaramulla, according to the Prime Minister’s Media Division.
Also commenting at the event, Government Parliamentarian Sugath Wasantha de Silva expressed his views, saying: “Sign language should not remain a mode of communication only among the deaf community.”
