Cabinet approves transfer of dilapidated hostels to UDA for redevelopment

08 Jul 2025 | BY Staff Writer

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the transfer of 44 Government-owned hostel sites to the Urban Development Authority (UDA) for redevelopment under investor-led initiatives.

These hostels, many dating back to the colonial era and located in tourism hotspots, have fallen into disrepair due to poor management by local authorities and the UDA.

The proposal, presented by the Minister of Urban Development, Construction and Housing, aims to transform the facilities into profitable, high-quality accommodations that contribute to public revenue.

The lands will be granted to the UDA under the Government Land Ordinance, and private investment proposals will be invited to revitalize the sites in line with modern economic demands.

Authorities believe the move will help unlock the tourism potential of these prime locations and improve hospitality infrastructure nationwide.
