Police issue urgent warning over rise in teenage pregnancies

18 May 2026 | BY Staff Writer

Police have issued an urgent public advisory following a reported rise in teenage and underage pregnancies, calling on parents, guardians and children to work together to protect young people and prevent further incidents.

Authorities stressed that strong family support and parental involvement are crucial, warning that emotional distance and lack of attention can leave children vulnerable to exploitation and risky behaviour. Police noted that some teenagers, particularly young girls, may seek emotional connections through social media when family support is lacking.

Police also cautioned that platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp can expose children to inappropriate contacts and online risks if not used carefully.

Parents have been urged to create supportive environments where children can openly discuss concerns and to watch for warning signs such as behavioural changes, declining school performance, excessive smartphone use and social withdrawal.

The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) reported receiving 10,455 child-related complaints in 2025, including 545 sexual harassment cases, 231 serious sexual abuse cases, 38 rape incidents, 150 cyber abuse complaints, and 79 teenage pregnancies.

Police urged the public to immediately report abuse, harassment or child safety concerns through emergency hotlines 119, 118, 109 or 107.
