The capacity of the Maussakele and Castlereagh hydro power reservoirs is rapidly decreasing amid the ongoing dry weather in the central hills, raising concerns over water supply for electricity generation.
Engineers in charge reported that, as of yesterday morning, the water level in the Maussakele reservoir was 47 feet below the spill level, while the Castlereagh reservoir’s level was 43.8 feet below spill level.
These reservoirs are crucial sources for several hydroelectric complexes, including Laxapana, New Laxapana, Polpitiya, Canyon, Wimalasurendra, and Broadland.
As water levels continue to fall, the submerged ruins of the old Maskeliya town, along with several religious sites that were once part of the area, have re-emerged into view, serving as a stark reminder of the ongoing drought’s impact.
