A team of experts from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command (NMOC) has arrived in Sri Lanka to support hydrographic mapping efforts.

US Ambassador Julie Chung noted the project would help Sri Lanka map its waters, ensuring safer commercial shipping lanes and strengthening maritime domain awareness.

Hydrographic surveys help ensure safe navigation.

She emphasised that understanding the seabed was vital for protecting maritime sovereignty. 

The visit follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed on 14 November to enhance bilateral defence cooperation.
