Lankan team that participated in AYG returns

The Sri Lankan team that participated in the Asian Youth Games (AYG) held in Bahrain returned to the island Sunday morning (2).

The Sri Lankan team won 1 gold medal, 1 silver medal and 5 bronze medals at the tournament.

A large number of athletes representing 45 nations from the Asian region took part in the Championship.

In the competition, Lahiru Achintha of the St. Aloysius National School, Ratnapura, grabbed gold in the boys’ 1,500 meter event.

The victorious team arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) at 8:40 a.m., on board a private airline flight from Dubai.

Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage, Sports Deputy Minister Sugath Thilakaratne, Gampaha District Member of Parliament Champika Hettiarachchi, members of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOCSL), teachers from the schools attended by the athletes, their parents and a large number of supporters were present at the airport to welcome the team.
