A vehicle for Rs. 1.2 million

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP)-led National People’s Power (NPP) has pledged a vehicle for every household in the country within the next 10 years, as vehicles could be imported for around Rs. 1.2 million.

This statement was made by Nalin Hewage, a JVP/NPP candidate at the upcoming Parliamentary Elections, during a recent public meeting. He had stated that a vehicle could often be bought with a month’s salary in foreign countries; however, a majority of the public could not afford a vehicle even with their lifelong savings in Sri Lanka.

“A Toyota Vitz can be imported for Rs. 1.2 million, which is affordable, but the heavy taxes make it costly. It’s not the price of the vehicles that prevents people from buying them; it’s the excessive taxes,” he had noted.

“We are confident that within 10 years, we can create an economy that enables each household in this country to own a vehicle,” Hewage had added.
