Govt. installs warning signs to prevent elephant-train collisions

10 Sep 2025 | BY Staff Writer

A special Parliamentary committee, led by Ministers Dammika Patabendi and Bimal Rathnayake, has begun implementing immediate solutions to prevent elephants from being hit by trains.

As a first step, 147 signboards with elephant images were handed over to the Railways Department.

These signs, designed by the Elephant Rescue Foundation, will be installed along high-risk railway lines, including those in Gal Oya, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, and Mannar.

The signs will alert train drivers to areas with high elephant activity, particularly during night services.

In addition to the signs, Wildlife and Railways staff will collaborate to train drivers and crew on high-risk collision points.

A pilot project to install thermal cameras on trains in the coming months is also planned.
