  • Only internal party challenge to make public expectations a reality
  • Notes that NPP must adapt to modern world trends by erasing ideological differences, tells TUs to be fair

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that while there is no external challenge for the National People's Power (NPP) Government, the real challenge lies within the party itself to change the country by making the people's expectations a reality.

Speaking at the party's May Day rally held at Galle Face Green yesterday (1 May), President Dissanayake said that the NPP, as a political force, must adapt to new trends, erasing differences in ideologies to understand the modern world. He also said that the Opposition has been completely abandoned and poses no challenge to the Government.

Commenting on the trade unions' (TUs) demands, the President urged them to be fair when making demands, as the Government has already shown interest in addressing the issues raised. He said that trade unions must also change their approach to achieve their goals. “We have increased salaries even without an official announcement. We have worked with trade unions. Therefore, we have no barriers to understanding their needs. So, the trade unions must be fair in making demands,” he added.

The President further noted that the Government mainly focuses on four key pillars; non-corrupt politics, national unity, a strong public service, and the rule of law. He also said that the mandate received by the Government shows how much the people value national unity. He also pledged to make law enforcement institutions more active and fair to everyone in the society.

He added that the NPP is working to create a better country for future generations, claiming that a new beginning has started with renewed strength. He also invited the public to vote for the NPP at the upcoming Local Government Elections to strengthen the Government’s programme.
