Disciplinary action against consultant: Court restrains Shammi and Co.

16 May 2024

The Colombo District Court yesterday (15) imposed an injunction on Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) restraining them from taking disciplinary action against former SLC consultant turned whistleblower Anura Virasinghe, after revealing information about the alleged corruption and irregularities at the sport’s local governing body.

Colombo District Judge Sandun Withana who considered a complaint submitted by the petitioner (Virasinghe) issued the relevant injunction to remain in place till 29 May.

The Judge afterwards instructed SLC President Shammi Silva, who has been named as one of the respondents in the complaint, to be noticed to appear in Court on the said date.

It was reported by Aruna, that President’s Counsel (PC) Dinal Phillips, representing the petitioner had informed the Court that his client had revealed information concerning alleged acts of corruption and irregularities under Silva’ watch at SLC via a press conference.

He then charged that in the wake of that news conference, his client’s services had been illegally terminated by the President of the SLC, while initiating disciplinary action against him.

The PC then prayed the Court to issue an injunction to halt the disciplinary inquiry against his client, as it is against the law.

Having considered the submissions produced before the Court by the petitioner, the Judge imposed the injunction against the Shammi Silva-led SLC.
