The Wildlife and Nature Protection Society (WNPS) has filed a fundamental rights application in the Supreme Court, challenging the cabinet's decision to award a wind power project on Mannar Island to Adani Green Energy Limited.
Represented by President’s Counsel Sanjeeva Jayawardana, WNPS argues the project threatens the island's unique biodiversity and protected areas.
Accordingly, they claim the decision violates environmental laws and conventions.
The petition also highlights conflicts of interest within the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA) and discrepancies in power generation costs.
WNPS calls for a thorough review to ensure environmental justice and accountability.
