Navy, MRCC actively search for Mirissa trawler

23 Dec 2025 | BY The News Desk

The Sri Lanka Maritime Rescue Coordinating Centre (SL MRCC) is attempting to locate and establish contact with a multi-day fishing trawler reported missing after setting out from the Mirissa Fishing Harbour.

Navy Spokesperson, Commander Buddhika Sampath told The Daily Morning yesterday (22) the Navy and the MRCC were making every effort to find the vessel. The trawler’s owner had reported losing contact with the boat. Sampath said that it is standard practice for owners and families to communicate with fishermen onboard using mobile phones. He added that all fishing vessels are required to operate a monitoring system, made compulsory by the Fisheries Department, which helps establish contact in emergencies.

Under these circumstances, nearby fishing boats were also alerted to the missing vessel and its crew.

Attempts to reach the Minister and the Secretary of the Fisheries Ministry were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.

The multi–day fishing trawler, named Idurangi 1, has five fishermen onboard. According to relatives, the vessel has been unaccounted for since 21 November of this year (2025), with the last communication received on 6 December 2025. No further information about the trawler or its crew has been reported since.
