The Sri Lankan contingent who took part at the Asian Classic Powerlifting Championships in Malaysia did well in the recently concluded event.
Former Royalist Uvindu Jayasinghe broke the 300kg barrier in squats at the 105kg category, establishing a new national record and clinched the bronze medal as well. In the overall table, Uvindu finished in sixth place by lifting a total of 762.5kg in all disciplines of the sport. It is a new national record in his category whilst his 292.5kg deadlift is also a new national record.
Shevoni Nethara won bronze in the Women’s Junior 84kg category. Shevoni, a past pupil of Our Lady of Victories Convent, Moratuwa was also able to bag bronze in the squat –100kg and bench press – 57.5kg. Going one step higher Shevoni secured silver in the deadlift – 142.5kg event.
Meanwhile Jenosha Mendis, former Wesleyite and rugby player won silver in the men’s junior squat – 74kg category.
