Sri Lanka forms economic monitoring committee to address Middle East conflict impact

In response to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and its potential repercussions on Sri Lanka’s economy, the government established the Economic Monitoring Committee.

The committee convened yesterday (10) at the Presidential Secretariat to assess the situation and formulate measures to protect national stability and citizens' welfare.

Chaired by Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning and Minister of Labour, Anil Jayantha Fernando, the committee includes key economic and industry leaders such as the Governor of the Central Bank, P. Nandalal Weerasinghe, and senior officials from the Treasury, Ministry of Industry, and various state corporations.

The committee’s discussions focused on the risks posed by external shocks, particularly given Sri Lanka’s reliance on fuel imports, remittances from Middle East migrant workers, and trade links with the region. Experts emphasized the urgent need for policy measures to stabilize markets, safeguard employment, and ensure economic resilience amid global uncertainties.

As the global economy remains volatile due to the Middle East conflict, Sri Lanka is closely monitoring developments to implement proactive strategies that mitigate adverse impacts on its fragile economy.
