- Up-and-coming artistes to perform at ‘Stripped Soul’
Artistry, established in 2018, with the sole aim of creating a platform for young musicians to display their abilities has grown significantly over time. The group has expanded and is currently organising events that draw the attention of emerging celebrities, influencers, and media personalities.
Gihani Bulathsinhala, one of the founders of Artistry, shared with us the story of how this group came to be. It all started with the desire to create a space for young people to showcase their talents and hang out while having fun. Gihani and her siblings Harshana Chathuranga and Yasith Wikramasinghe, later joined by a mutual friend Mevan Karunarathna, started Artistry back in early 2018, and the group has been growing ever since.
When asked about the upcoming event, Stripped Soul, Gihani shared that they have decided to invite special guests such as up-and-coming celebrities Rehan and Yohani, influencers, and media to the event. This is a significant departure from their previous events, which were open to the general public. Gihani hopes that this move will help to bolster the group’s reputation and that of the young musicians who will be performing.
The event will be held on 25 March at Trace 7 in Maradana, Colombo. Food and beverages will be available at the venue, and the bar will be open for those over 21. Tickets will be available at the entrance for those who wish to support the young musicians.
Gihani emphasised that Artistry’s main goal is to have fun and give young musicians a platform to showcase their talents. The group hopes to create an environment where music enthusiasts can appreciate the skills of these up-and-coming musicians. She also stressed that the event is open to all who wish to join, support and have a good time with them.
When asked about the group’s long-term vision, Gihani shared that they hope to continue to provide a platform for young musicians to showcase their talents. She believes that there is a wealth of untapped talent in Sri Lanka, and Artistry can help to bring these musicians to the forefront. Gihani and her siblings plan to achieve this vision by continuing to host events and expanding their network to include more influential people in the music industry.
The Daily Morning Brunch had an in-depth chat with Gihani on this year’s event and what we can expect. Here’s what she had to say.
Can you tell us more about the selection process for the performers at your events?
We conducted a preliminary audition on the inaugural day, following our prior announcement of the selection test on Instagram to attract interested participants. We were satisfied with the turn out and managed to weed out a few stars from the applicants.
How has Artistry impacted the local community since its inception in 2018?
Artistry provides a nurturing environment for young individuals to express their creativity and foster inspiration. Our Open Mic Nights served as a catalyst for this objective, as we fostered an atmosphere of encouragement, positivity, and confidence among our participants and the local community.
What are some of the challenges you have faced as a group in organising these events?
During our early stages, we encountered various financial challenges, and while we have made progress, additional support is still necessary. As of now, our organising committee is primarily responsible for financing our operations, and we have yet to identify any alternative solutions to this predicament.
What is the long-term vision for Artistry, and how do you plan to achieve it?
Artistry has several events lined up for the future, but the lack of sufficient sponsors is a concern. As such, we urge the public to attend our upcoming concerts, where they will witness first-hand the exceptional talent of our performers. We hope that this will garner increased support and recognition for our organisation.
How do you think Artistry is contributing to the overall development of young talent in Sri Lanka?
Artistry is committed to affording emerging musicians the chance to hone their craft by performing before a live audience. Furthermore, we are determined to compensate these artists for their hard work in the near future, thereby providing them with a source of income and facilitating their continued participation in the music industry.
