Sri Lanka marked a major step forward in its digital transformation journey as Prime Minister (PM) Harini Amarasuriya welcomed plans to introduce PayPal services to the country through partnerships with local banks.
The initiative will initially roll out through Bank of Ceylon, Commercial Bank of Ceylon and Sampath Bank PLC, with additional banking institutions expected to join in the coming months.
The move is expected to significantly improve secure cross-border payment access for freelancers, entrepreneurs, start-ups, SMEs and digital service providers, helping them connect more efficiently with international markets and customers.
Speaking at an industry event attended by senior government officials and financial sector leaders, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya described the development as an important milestone for Sri Lanka’s digital economy ambitions.
She emphasised that transparent and secure financial systems are essential for future growth, particularly as the country focuses on expanding e-commerce, digital entrepreneurship and online services.
With Sri Lanka’s SME sector contributing around 52% of GDP, improved access to global payment platforms is expected to create new opportunities and strengthen the country’s role in the international digital economy.
