Jonathan Trott set for Lanka job?

05 Mar 2026

Former England batter Jonathan Trott is a leading candidate to replace outgoing Sri Lanka head coach Sanath Jayasuriya, The Daily Morning Sports, reliably understands.

However, sources from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) are yet to officially confirm the appointment, as Sri Lanka emerges from its calamitous campaign at the ongoing T20 World Cup, where four losses on the bounce saw them being eliminated prior to the Knockout stage.

Trott, 44, served as the head coach of Afghanistan for three-and-a-half-years after which he quit following their exit from the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

The ex-right-handed batter who represented his country from 2007 to 2015, winning a total of 127 caps across all formats, saw his contract expiring as part of a pre-planned administrative transition by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB).

Jayasuriya whose contract with the SLC is only due to lapse in June stepped into international coaching for the first time in his post-career in late 2024.

He had publicly announced his decision to step down following his team’s 5-run loss to Pakistan in their final Super Eight clash against Pakistan in Kandy on 28 February.
