Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga qualified for the Men’s Javelin Throw final event at the 2025 World Athletics Championship in Tokyo.
He qualified for the final with a throw of 82.8m in the qualification round held at the Japan National Stadium on Wednesday (17). Anderson Peters had the longest throw in the qualifiers. While Germany’s Julian Weber threw a distance of 87.21m.
Sumedha Ranasinghe could not qualify for the final after finishing 15th in the qualifying round with a distance of 81.86m.
Sri Lanka’s Tharanga and Ranasinghe had directly qualified for the ongoing event.
The last occasion a Lankan elite athlete had won a medal in the event’s history, was during the edition held in Osaka in 2007.
Retired sprint-queen Susanthika Jayasinghe returned home with bronze in the women’s 200m during that event.
The final of the Men’s Javelin Throw event is scheduled to be held today (19).
