Sri Lanka recorded 53 elephant deaths and 17 injuries due to train collisions from 2020 to 2024, Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) disclosed during a review of the Railways Department.

Despite a 2018 study identifying high-risk crossings, incidents continue to rise, with 200 elephants now frequenting tracks daily.

Authorities are exploring long-term solutions with the Wildlife Department.
