The National Institute of Education (NIE) has approved the removal of the questionable lesson from the Grade Six English module which created huge controversy after it was confirmed that the material contained a reference to an inappropriate website, the Prime Minister and Education Minister, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has confirmed.
The Premier made this revelation in response to a question raised in the Parliament yesterday (7).
Meanwhile, steps have been taken to prepare a code of guidelines on cyber security for officials involved in curriculum development, as well as the preparation and review of school textbooks. A discussion in this regard was held on Tuesday (6) at the Temple Trees under the patronage of Dr. Amarasuriya, with the participation of the working group on online safety, digital well-being, and cyber security operating under the Task Force for the Digitalisation of Education for Grades Six to 13. Addressing the meeting, Dr. Amarasuriya underscored the importance of introducing such guidelines, emphasising the growing need to ensure online safety and digital well-being within the education sector. She further directed officials to formulate a comprehensive framework of guidelines on online safety, digital well-being, and cyber security, specifically targeting those responsible for the development, preparation, and review of school curricula and textbooks.
