The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber advisory for severe lightning in the Uva, Eastern, Central and North Central provinces and Mullaitivu District.

The advisory is in effect from 10.30 a.m. today (16) until 11.30 p.m.

Thundershowers with severe lightning are likely in several areas, with temporary localised strong winds also possible during thunderstorms.

The public has been advised to take adequate precautions to minimise risks from lightning.
