The Health Ministry Secretary, Dr. Anil Jasinghe stated that steps are expected to be taken in the near future to elevate the Jaffna Teaching Hospital (TH) to a National Hospital status after fulfilling the required criteria.

An institutional review of the Jaffna TH was conducted at the Parliamentary Sectoral Oversight Committee on Health, Mass Media and Women’s Empowerment. The Committee met in the Parliament on 21 January, under the Chairpersonship of Dr. Nihal Abeysinghe.

The Jaffna TH authorities pointed out that there is a growing need for additional staff in order to further improve and expand medical treatments and services currently being provided.

They were also informed of the need to upgrade the Hospital to the status of a National Hospital. Dr. Abeysinghe also highlighted the need to reassess staffing requirements at the Hospital. Furthermore, the Hospital authorities requested to facilitate the appointment of an internal auditor to the Hospital in order to ensure transparency in Hospital administration and overall operations.
