The Government has decided to extend the special commodity levy of Rs. 50 per kg on imported sugar until 31 December, continuing the levy that was originally set to expire on 1 November.
This extension was formalised through a Gazette notification issued by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake as the Minister of Finance.
The initial tax, implemented on 1 November 2023, aimed to stabilise local market prices amid fluctuations in the global sugar trade.
