Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Nalinda Jayatissa says the Chief Prelates of the Malwathu, Asgiri and Ramanna Chapters accepted the government’s explanation regarding the proposed extension of judges’ retirement age.

Jayatissa said he and Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara briefed the Chief Prelates yesterday (03) on the proposed 22nd Constitutional Amendment and amendments to the Judicature Act.

He stated that the government clarified the reforms would apply to all judges and were not intended to target any individual judge.

According to Jayatissa, the Chief Prelates did not express opposition after receiving the explanation, while discussions also focused on reducing the backlog of court cases.
