Colombo FC emerged victorious in the City League President’s Cup 2023 at the City Football Complex, securing a 2-0 win against Maligawaththa Youth with two second-half goals.
During the initial half, despite Colombo's domination in possession and territory, the match remained closely contested. Colombo pressed through the wings, though their crosses were efficiently handled by the vigilant Maligawaththa defenders. Maligawaththa attempted two free kicks but lacked precision in their execution.
Colombo maintained a strong presence in the opposition half, yet the disciplined Maligawaththa Youth defence thwarted their advances until halftime.
Following the interval, Maligawaththa Youth adopted an attacking stance and came close to taking the lead from a free kick at the edge of the box. However, Mohamed Imran managed to clear the ball from danger.
Shortly thereafter, Colombo surged ahead as Charitha Rathnayake, advancing from centre-back, struck the crossbar and the rebound favoured Mohamed Aakib, who effortlessly headed in a goal from close range in the 51st minute.
In the 64th minute, Aakib extended Colombo's lead against his hometown team, skillfully finishing with his left foot from an assist by Ahamed Shazny, silencing the majority of the Maligawaththa Youth crowd. Subsequently, the game lost its intensity as the more experienced Colombo side maintained control until the final whistle.
