  • Rajeev Amarasuriya re-elected as BASL President

The Constitutional Council (CC) yesterday (3) unanimously approved the appointment of Senior Deputy Auditor General (AG) L.S.I. Jayaratne to the position of the AG.

The CC convened at noon yesterday at the Parliament Complex and the meeting was chaired by the Speaker of the House Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne. It was reported that the CC considered the names recommended by the President for the position of the AG during the meeting. Accordingly, a final decision on the appointment of a new AG was made yesterday after several days of much deliberation.

The position of the AG has remained vacant since 8 April of last year (2025) following the retirement of former AG, W.P.C. Wickramaratne. Subsequently, a senior officer of the AG’s Department, Dharmapala Gammanpila, was appointed to the post on an Acting basis; however, his term concluded on 5 December 2025.

Although the President had previously submitted several nominations for the post, those recommendations were rejected by the CC. The President later forwarded new nominations, leading to yesterday’s final decision.

Meanwhile, Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) President, attorney-at-law (AAL) Rajeev Amarasuriya has been re-elected, uncontested, for a further term as the BASL President for 2026 and next year (2027). He will be formally inducted at the 52nd BASL convocation scheduled for 28 March 2026, according to the BASL. Former BASL Treasurer, AAL Nalin Chandika De Silva was also elected uncontested as the new BASL Secretary for 2026-2027 and will take over from the incumbent Secretary, AAL Chathura Galhena, who completes his two-year term, at the Association’s 2026 Convocation. These results were officially declared by the Returning Officer, President’s Counsel and Solicitor General Viraj Dayaratne.
