A protest by employees of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has led to the closure of one lane on Chittampalam A. Gardiner Mawatha, causing heavy traffic from Slave Island to the Lake House roundabout.

Police have advised motorists to use alternative routes to avoid congestion.

The protest is part of a series of trade union actions against the government's approach to restructuring the CEB. 

Unions argue that the process is being handled arbitrarily and without their consent.

The unions initiated a work-to-rule campaign on 4 September and further escalated their protest with a sick leave campaign that began yesterday and is continuing today(18).

Kosala Abeysinghe, the President of the Ceylon Electricity Board Technician’s Union, warned that the ongoing trade union actions will be intensified if authorities continue to disregard their demands
