The Department of Meteorology in Sri Lanka has announced that the country is expected to experience developing El Niño conditions during the upcoming southwest monsoon season, which spans from May to September.
Department Director General Athula Karunanayake explained that these conditions are likely to influence the monsoon, leading to a reduction in rainfall and changes in wind patterns after May 15.
He emphasised that as El Niño strengthens gradually from May onwards, Sri Lanka may see a decrease in southwest monsoon rainfall, particularly in the southwestern regions.
“Less rainfall is expected in the southwestern part of the country, with a possibility of reduced lightning activity,” Karunanayake noted.
He also mentioned that the gradual decline in rainfall could help mitigate rising temperatures over time, providing some relief during the hot season.
The Meteorology Department forecasted afternoon showers and thundershowers across several regions, including the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North Western, and Eastern provinces, as well as in districts like Polonnaruwa, Galle, and Matara.
Some areas, particularly in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, along with Galle and Matara districts, are expected to experience heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm today.
Additionally, fairly strong winds of 30–40 km/h are forecasted for parts of the Northern and North Central provinces, as well as the Hambantota district, highlighting the varied weather patterns expected during this period.
