Travel ban on Namal et al. lifted

08 Jun 2023

The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court yesterday (7) ordered to lift the overseas travel bans imposed on a group of individuals including Government Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa, who are not named as suspects in the case concerning the attack on the “GotaGoGama” protest site at the Galle Face Green.

The Court ordered the case against Government MPs Johnston Fernando, Sanath Nishantha Perera and Milan Jayathilake filed over the same to be recalled on 19 July.

The case was taken up before Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage yesterday.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) informed the Court that a petition has been filed before the Court of Appeal, challenging the instructions provided by the Attorney General regarding the suspects of this case. Thus, the CID, mentioning that the Court of Appeal’s verdict on that petition is expected on 23 June, requested the Magistrate to recall the relevant case on another date, after the said verdict is delivered. Accordingly, the Magistrate ordered the case to be taken up on 19 July.

The Court, accepting the facts presented by the attorneys, also ordered to lift the overseas travel bans imposed on a group of individuals including Rajapaksa, who are not named as suspects in the relevant case.
