Special security and traffic arrangements for Sinhala and Tamil New Year

In anticipation of the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations, Sri Lankan police have announced that special security and traffic management measures will be put in place starting from 1 April.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Traffic Control and Road Safety) W. P. J. Senadheera stated that, with an expected surge in travel during the festive season, additional traffic and security personnel will be deployed nationwide.

Particular focus will be given to key public transport hubs, such as railway stations and main bus stands in major cities like Colombo, where enhanced traffic control and safety measures will be enforced.

The coordinated plan, which aligns with previous years’ arrangements, will be in effect continuously from April 1 until the end of the festive period and until travelers have returned to their hometowns and cities.

The deployment of officers is already underway under the guidance of the Inspector General of Police.

Furthermore, police officers currently stationed at fuel stations will gradually be reassigned to strengthen traffic and security operations, following earlier deployments to manage panic buying and fuel hoarding concerns across the country.

These measures aim to ensure safe travel and public order during the holiday festivities.
