Chinese woman arrested at BIA with 28,000 cigarettes

A 40-year-old Chinese businesswoman has been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) for attempting to smuggle foreign-made cigarettes into Sri Lanka.


She arrived on China Eastern Airlines flight MU-6017 from Kunming and tried to exit through the Green Channel.


Sri Lanka Customs officers found 140 cartons containing 28,000 cigarettes in her luggage.


The consignment is estimated to be worth Rs.4.2mn. Investigations are continuing.
