The Centre for Environmental Justice (CEJ) has urged President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to appoint a Presidential Commission to investigate the 2021 MV X-Press Pearl marine disaster.

CEJ cited severe environmental damage and a lack of transparency by former officials, calling for a panel of environmental, legal, and civil society experts under the 1978 Commissions of Inquiry Law.
