- 4 more surrender, 11 suspended
Four third-year students of the Sabaragamuwa University, who were arrested over an alleged ragging incident, have been remanded until 16 May by the Balangoda Magistrate’s Court.
The suspects were arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on 4 May in connection with ongoing investigations into the recent death of a fellow student, allegedly linked to a ragging incident.
Meanwhile, the academic activities of 11 students of the Sabaragamuwa University have been suspended over the death of a student allegedly due to ragging, the Police said. It was reported that the students include the four third year students arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on 4 May.
Four more students of the Sabaragamuwa University have surrendered to the Samanalawewa Police and have been handed over to the CID for questioning, the Police added.
On 29 April, it was reported that a student of the Sabaragamuwa University, allegedly distraught over a ragging incident, had taken his own life. The deceased was a 23-year-old second-year student from the Department of Engineering Technology of the university.
On 1 May, a complaint was lodged with the Samanala Wewa Police Station by another student of the university, alleging that the deceased had committed suicide due to ragging.
Following the complaint, on 2 May, the Samanala Wewa Police recorded statements from 20 university students who have also allegedly been subjected to ragging.
Meanwhile, the investigation into the alleged ragging incident involving the deceased was handed over to the CID on 3 May, following the instructions of the Acting Inspector General of Police.
