World Social Media Day, is observed today (30), highlights the transformative role of social media in reshaping global communication.
From platforms like Friendster and MySpace to Facebook, Twitter (X), Instagram, and TikTok, social media has evolved into a powerful tool for connection, information sharing, and community building.
It now influences public opinion, politics, and everyday interactions, uniting people worldwide.
Wijayananda Rupasinghe, a Senior Lecturer in Mass Communication at the University of Kelaniya, emphasises its significance, stating, “Social media has revolutionized the media landscape, and today’s society cannot exist without it.”
In Sri Lanka, 53% of the population (around 12 million people) uses social media, with TikTok experiencing rapid growth.
Rupasinghe stresses the need for digital media literacy to navigate its benefits and challenges responsibly.
While social media fosters unity, it also has the potential to divide, underscoring the importance of mindful usage.
Its role continues to expand, making it an essential part of modern life.
