In anticipation of the 2024 Olympics, Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Harin Fernando, aligning with the Olympic spirit, has instructed the Director General of Sports to provide equal opportunities for Sri Lankan youth to attain qualifications for the upcoming Summer Olympic Games in Paris, France, starting on 26 July.
As the Minister of Sports, Fernando will secure special approval from the Cabinet of Ministers for the innovative programme, ‘Road to Olympics’. This initiative ensures that Sri Lankan athletes receive all necessary facilities and funding to participate in crucial Olympic Qualifiers and international competitions from January to July, aiming to meet the qualification standards.
The National Sports Council led by Dr. Maiya Gunasekera entrusted the herculean task to Director General of Sports Rear Admiral Prof. Shemal Fernando, Hafeez Marso, Major General Rajitha Ampemohotti, and Sriyani Kulawansa, who have carefully selected 44 top athletes from various sports disciplines.
Fernando has emphasised on inclusivity by offering an opportunity to those who missed out due to various reasons. Sports enthusiasts and stakeholders in Sri Lanka are encouraged to reach out to the Director General of Sports via email (shemal1216@gmail.com) or WhatsApp (+94773584184) from 18-24 January.
This historic opportunity marks the first time in Sri Lanka’s 74-year Olympic history that such a comprehensive initiative has been undertaken to support and elevate the country’s athletes.
Reflecting on past achievements, including Duncan White’s Silver medal in the 1948 London in 400 m hurdles and Susanthika Jayasinghe’s Silver medal in 200 m at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Sri Lanka continues to strive for excellence on the global Olympic stage.
