Guidelines issued for optimal use of digital technologies in govt. institutions

27 Apr 2026 | BY Staff Writer

The Ministry of Digital Economy and Public Administration has announced a new set of guidelines aimed  at optimizing the use of digital technologies for heads of institutions to deliver public services remotely.

This initiative comes in response to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has affected fuel supplies to Sri Lanka, prompting the government to take measures to reduce in-office work and conserve energy.

The move is part of broader efforts to ensure the continued functioning of public services amid energy shortages.

Under the guidance of the Cabinet Committee on Maintaining Public Services, chaired by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, the Ministry of Digital Economy was tasked with examining the feasibility of shifting more operations to remote work.

The ministry collaborated with the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government to develop practical solutions.

As a result, interim guidelines have been issued to all public institution heads, providing recommendations on how to effectively employ digital tools for remote service delivery and routine office tasks.

The guidelines are available in all three official languages and can be accessed through the Ministry’s official website at https://mode.gov.lk/docs/guidelines.
