Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya yesterday (22) called on members of the Scout Movement to uphold values of service, discipline and environmental responsibility while contributing actively to society.
She made these remarks while attending a ceremony held at the National Scout Headquarters in Colombo to mark the 169th birth anniversary of Robert Baden-Powell and World Scout Thinking Day, where she participated as Chief Guest.
Addressing scouts and officials, the Premier said the Scout Movement was “not merely about holding positions, but about being prepared to help others and serve society.” She noted that scouting instils readiness, compassion and civic responsibility among young people.
Dr. Amarasuriya also stressed the importance of balancing technological advancement with core human values. She encouraged scouts to become “smart scouts” who remain disciplined, respectful and committed to community service.
Highlighting environmental responsibility, she urged scouts to contribute to safeguarding the country’s future through initiatives such as tree planting programmes and the protection of water sources.
During the ceremony, laptops were symbolically distributed to several districts under the Scouts Digitalisation Project, while first aid kits were also handed over to support scouting activities.
Chief Commissioner Attorney-at-Law Manoj Nanayakkara presented the Prime Minister with a special collection of scout stamps together with a commemorative cover marking the occasion.
