‘Makandure Madush’: Request for CID to handle case

11 Sep 2025 | BY Sumudu Chamara

A request has been submitted to the Police seeking that investigations into the custodial death of organised criminal Madush Lakshitha alias ‘Makandure Madush’ be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Dissatisfaction with the ongoing investigations has been cited as the reason for this request. After submitting the request to the Police Headquarters yesterday (10), Madush’s wife, W.D. Gayani Muthumali, expressed doubts about his death, stating that it occurred outside any legally sanctioned process and is therefore questionable.

She further told the media that despite five years having passed since his death, the investigations have not produced sufficient results.

In addition, Committee for Protecting the Rights of Prisoners Chairperson attorney Senaka Perera explained that the request was based on the belief that the CID has the capacity to effectively investigate Madush’s death.

“The situation is such that everything that he revealed at the CID during a one-and-a-half-year period, including information relating to politicians, Police officers, and other individuals, may get buried,” he said.

He added that when investigating a person suspected of a crime, inquiries should also focus on the network of other criminals connected to that individual. Noting that a person’s death obstructs investigations into others linked to him, Perera opined that the proper interrogation of Madush could have led to the exposure of others connected to him.
