The Cabinet has approved a programme to implement small town and rural water supply projects across Sri Lanka.
The plan covers 300 projects in 50 small towns and rural areas, aiming to provide safe drinking water to around 600,000 families in semi-urban and rural regions.
The programme will include modern water treatment methods such as chlorination and filtration to meet national and international standards. A feasibility study will be conducted before inclusion in the 2027–2029 public investment plan.
The projects will be implemented by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board and the National Community Water Supply Department.
