The United States Pacific Fleet Commander, Admiral Steve Koehler arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday (19) on an official visit scheduled till tomorrow (21).
The US Embassy in Colombo said in a message posted on X, “Admiral Koehler met with Secretary of Defence, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd) to reaffirm our transparent partnership that protects sovereignty and strengthens regional security. They discussed expanding practical cooperation and strengthening maritime security to support stability across the Indo-Pacific.”
According to the Embassy post on X, their discussions prioritised: “Professionalism and capability: strengthening the bonds between our professional forces, shared security: enhancing interoperability to address transnational threats. Maritime domain awareness: advancing long-term commitment and collaboration for a secure Indian Ocean.”
The US Pacific Fleet, described as the world’s largest Naval fleet command, conducts operations across the Indo-Pacific region. Its mandate includes safeguarding vital sea lanes and working closely with regional partners on security initiatives.
This is Admiral Koehler’s second visit to Sri Lanka, underscoring the strategic importance that Washington attaches to Sri Lanka’s position along key international maritime routes.
