Fox Hill calamity: Is the Sports Ministry in slumber?

30 Apr 2024 | By a Special Correspondent

As the saga to unravel the person or persons behind the horrific crash, at Fox Hill Supercross 2024 on 21 April continues, it has been revealed that the Ministry of Sports is yet to launch a serious probe of its own, to the calamity to date.

The crash, the biggest in the annals of the country’s motor racing sphere, at Diyatalawa, claimed the lives of seven individuals, including an eight-year-old girl.

This was after a car veered off the track and ploughed into spectators, amidst the plumes of dust, which had masked the visibility of drivers.

However,  The Daily Morning Sports, learns that the sole authority for sports here, is yet to act, in an effort to get to the bottom of the crash, having allegedly confined it as another unavoidable incident.

Efforts made to contact the Secretary to the Ministry of Sports K. Maheshan, to seek his response proved futile, as he was unavailable for comment throughout.

It has been said that the safety of spectators had not been given due consideration, by the event organisers SLAS and the Military Academy at Diyatalawa, as a group of eager fans who had got closer to the action, in their over enthusiasm, were ultimately forced to pay with their lives.

It has also been disclosed that the event organisers, had also not watered the track adequately to prevent the dust from the gravel-laden track, from blinding the drivers, ahead of the races being flagged off.

According to motor racing analysts, it has brought to light, the sheer amateurism of organisers, over their failure to prepare the racing track, in keeping with the regulations for conducting a Supercross.

Furthermore questions have been raised, as to what preparatory work the Army had done ahead of the races, with them only having formed a team to probe the incident, in its aftermath.

Yet it will be interesting to see as to what its outcome would be and whether the errant event organisers will be held accountable over the tragedy or the blame for it will be conveniently shifted to the side of the public, who patronised it.
